Founder series: turning coaching into products people buy without a call
Coaching income breaks when it depends on a sales call for every sale. The fix is a ladder: a paid file anyone can buy today, a cohort or course in the middle, and one-to-one work priced so it stays scarce.
1. Build the ladder before the funnel
A worksheet or template pack at $19 to $79, a cohort or self-paced course in the low hundreds, one-to-one at whatever your calendar justifies. Each rung qualifies buyers for the next, so the expensive offer sells to people who have already paid you once and got a result.
2. Payment plans and pricing pages
Two or three instalments make a $600 programme reachable without cutting the price for everyone. Show the total next to the plan, be explicit about what happens on a missed payment, and keep the pricing page to one screen of comparison — coaches lose more sales to confusion than to price.
3. Delivery is the product
A cohort is dated emails, a place to log in, a progress tracker and a way to ask questions. Self-paced work needs the same minus the dates. If the buyer cannot see what to do next after paying, refunds arrive before results do.
4. The refund policy that protects both sides
State the window, what it covers, and the outcome you claim. A fourteen-day, work-attempted refund on a self-paced product is honest and rarely abused, and it converts better than "all sales final" because it moves the risk off the buyer.

FAQ
- How should I price my course?
- Price against the outcome and the alternative cost of solving it, not against your recording time. Start at the low end of your range, raise it after the first cohort's results, and use payment plans instead of discounts.
- Do I need a booking tool if I sell coaching direct?
- Only for the rungs that involve your calendar. Files and self-paced products should sell and deliver with no scheduling at all.
- How do I handle refunds for a cohort?
- Offer a full refund up to a stated point before or shortly after the start, then pro-rata or none. Publish it on the checkout page so nobody is surprised.
