Founder series: pricing and licensing digital art so buyers know what they bought

For artists, the product is rarely just the file — it is the file plus the licence. Get the licence tiers and the delivery right and you can charge commercial rates without an inbox full of "can I use this for..." questions.

1. Licence tiers do the pricing for you

Personal use, small-business commercial, and extended or team use. Same files, three prices, and the buyer self-selects honestly most of the time. This is how a $12 pack becomes a $79 sale without new work — and it removes the awkward custom-quote conversation.

2. Write the licence like a human

Two short lists: what they can do, what they cannot. Include it on the product page, in the receipt, and as a text file in the ZIP. Ambiguity is what generates support email and chargebacks; clarity is a conversion feature.

3. Delivering big files without pain

Brush sets, layered PSDs and print-resolution art get large fast. Split enormous packs into a couple of downloads, keep each link tied to the order and expiring, and always offer a re-download page — buyers change machines and expect access to survive it.

4. Marketplace reach versus your own list

Discovery marketplaces genuinely surface work, and they keep the buyer. Treat them as advertising with a take rate: fulfil happily, and make sure everything you send elsewhere points back to a direct store where the next pack sells to someone who already loves your line work.

FAQ

How do I price a commercial licence?
A common ratio is roughly 3 to 6 times the personal-use price for small-business use, and more again for extended or team use. Anchor on the value of the buyer's output, not the hours you spent.
Should I watermark preview images?
Yes for full-resolution previews, no for the crops and detail shots that sell the work. Buyers need to see quality; scrapers should not get a usable file.
Can I sell the same pack on a marketplace and my own store?
Usually yes unless a listing is explicitly exclusive. Many artists price slightly higher on marketplaces to cover the fee and keep the direct store the best deal.
