Where to sell digital products: marketplaces vs your own store

There are two ways to sell a digital file: rent attention from a marketplace, or build a store you own. Most sellers should do both, in that order, and the reason comes down to who keeps the customer.

1. Marketplaces: rented traffic

Etsy, Creative Market and Envato already have millions of buyers searching, which is the one thing a new store cannot manufacture. The trade is fees on every sale, limited pricing and branding control, and no direct access to who bought. You are a listing inside someone else's search results, competing on thumbnail and price.

2. Creator platforms: middle ground

Gumroad, Payhip and similar tools handle checkout, delivery and taxes with almost no setup, and you keep the buyer's email. They bring far less organic traffic than a marketplace, so they work best once you have an audience — a newsletter, a following, or content that ranks.

3. Your own store: owned traffic

A store you control keeps the margin, the email list, the upsells and the analytics. It also means you are responsible for demand. That is why the compounding play is content: product pages, comparison pages and buying guides that rank, feeding checkout without paying per click.

4. How to sequence it

Launch on the platform closest to where your buyers already search. Use the first sales to learn which products convert and what buyers ask before paying. Then publish your own store with those answers built into the pages, and route every repeat buyer and every email subscriber there.

5. What actually decides your revenue

Not the platform. It is whether the product solves a specific problem, whether the page answers objections before the price, and whether buyers can pay in under a minute. A great product on a mediocre platform outsells a weak product on the perfect one.

FAQ

Where is the best place to sell digital products for free?
Payhip and Gumroad both allow selling with no monthly fee — they take a percentage per sale instead, so you pay only when you earn.
Is Etsy good for digital downloads?
Yes for discovery, because buyers search Etsy directly. Expect listing and transaction fees, heavy price competition, and no buyer email address.
Should I use a marketplace or my own site?
Both. Marketplaces for early traffic and validation, your own store for margin and repeat buyers once you know what sells.
How many products do I need to launch?
One that clearly solves a problem, plus a bundle path for later. Breadth helps search visibility, but a single strong seller funds everything after it.
